Objectives
WUS is an international organization operating in 50 countries and not affiliated to any political or confessional group. WUS regards itself as an international fellowship of students, teachers and other employees within the educational sector. The Society was founded in 1920 to provide support to people working, teaching and studying in universities. Today WUS is engaged at all educational levels and campaigns for education as a human right. Based on their belief that universities have a commitment to society, members of WUS work for the development of fairer, more socially just and more politically committed structures on a national and international level. Examples of WUS's activities include organizing seminars, producing publications and providing information. The Society is also engaged in public relations work on a political level, at institutional level in educational and developmental organizations as well as vis-à-vis the media. We participate in national and international campaigns in the areas of education and development, offer advice and organize scholarship programs and projects. WUS requires the active support of members (individuals / institutes) making a financial contribution to be able to conduct its work.

International educational work at TU Berlin

Center for International and Intercultural Communication

The Center for International and Intercultural Communication (ZiiK) offers German and international students a platform to engage with the intercultural issues involved in IT.

With its sustainable perspective, the ZiiK aims to intensify international dialog and create good future prospects, especially for students from developing countries.

Interculturality

Since 1994 Faculty IV has been running working groups (AGs) for the promotion of intercultural skills and for the advancement of women. The working groups engage with the issues of internationalization and interculturality as well as the promotion of women from developing countries.

Each year the ZiiK organizes intercultural events, such as culture and dialog weeks, conferences and workshops in collaboration with various institutions, embassies, development assistance organizations, the IT and Third World Technical Group of the German Informatics Society (Fachgruppe Informatik und Dritte Welt der GI) as well as businesses.

Teaching program

The teaching program includes seminars and projects on IT and developing countries. The program is intended to motivate both German and international students to dedicate their skills and abilities to development assistance.

To this end, the seminars focus on the theoretical-scientific approach to the area of research, while the projects are concerned with the analyses and implementation of specific tasks regarding the interdependency of technology and society in the context of a specific developing country.

Support

Many international students experience some personal difficulties and problems relating to their studies, both at the start of their studies and during the course of their degrees. Mentors are available to provide support relating to studies (cf. p. 11). Student Counseling addresses the specific social, personal and cultural issues faced by international students during their studies.

Research

There are two main areas of research at the Center for International and Intercultural Communication (ZiiK). The first of these examines the situation of international students, while the second addresses the use of IT in developing countries, the important role played by international students with regard to international knowledge and technology transfer, as well as the interaction of technological innovation and society in the specific context of a developing country.
